Getting Your Car Winter Ready

top Seven Things to ensure your car is ready for winter.

Driving in snow and slush is already a treacherous task that we all hate but have to do. So why not be prepared and safe for whatever Canadian winters decide to throw at us!

  1. Swap your tires to winter tires - Winter tires are your best defence against snow, slush and ice.  All-season tires and summer tires do not provide the same traction and stopping distance as a proper winter tire does.  This means you are more likely to get stuck, drift/plain, or slide out of control when trying to stop. Choosing a good quality winter tire designed specifically for your type of vehicle increases your traction.
  2. Fresh oil change - Having a fresh oil change can give your vehicle the performance boost it needs in the winter. Some makes and models recommend oil with a different viscosity to improve protection and performance in colder climates.
  3. Battery inspection - One of the most common problems in the winter is no-starts.  When your vehicle doesn’t start on that frosty morning it’s likely due to your battery lacking “cold-cranking amps”.So be sure to have your battery inspected and metered before winter.
  4. Brake inspection - Aside from your tires, nothing is more important than the condition of your brakes when it comes to stopping in snow, slush and ice. The three components that should be inspected and tested are your brake pads, brake rotors (or brake drums) and the callipers.  Brake pads should be even wearing on both sides and over 3mm thick. Anything else and it’s time to consider changing. Rotors should be smooth and without grooves and rust.
  5. Windshield and wiper blades - If your windshield has a chip in it, the winter is when it turns into a nasty crack that can span your entire windshield. The constant cold from outside and sudden heat from the defroster can cause a repairable chip to turn into a full replacement. Take care of chips before the cold weather starts to avoid costly windshield replacements.  Also, make sure you have winter wiper blades.  This is important because it often accumulates in summer blades and reduces visibility. Lastly, washer fluid.  If you leave water-based washer fluid in your reservoir it can freeze and not only damage the lines, tank and nozzles, it can leave you without visibility while driving.  There’s nothing worse than having a truck sling slush onto your windshield and no way to clean it off.
  6. Steering, suspension and belt inspection -  Oftentimes steering and suspension can become loose or damaged.  It isn’t until the colder months when we notice it most or it becomes a hindrance to safety.  Poor suspension inhibits the control you have in your vehicle when driving through inclement weather or over chunks of snow and ice.
  7. Rustproofing (optional) - Aside from the safety concerns winter poses, it is also hard on your vehicle's longevity and resale value.  The salt and slush on the roads cause harmful rust on metal parts and components which can lead to degradation, damage, and potential failure over time.  Rustproofing your vehicle can prolong the life of your vehicle's frame and metal components.  We usually recommend a drip-less formula that gives your vehicle protection without leaving a mess.

For these exact reasons, GoWrench Auto offers a comprehensive Full Service Winter Ready Package.  To really ensure your vehicle is ready, choose the Winter Ready Package + Rustproofing + Tire Storage for the ultimate protection, convenience and peace of mind.

We would definitely recommend GoWrench Auto. We had issues with one of our work trucks... We booked for an appointment, they came out to our house, and fixed the issue. They were very honest and reliable, and didn't try and upsell us.

Two weekends ago, in the first major storm of the year and bitter cold, Todd from GoWrench came to my house, on very short notice, and replaced my car battery. The service was very professional, and GoWrench was most accommodating. Todd was fast, efficient and friendly, and I will definitely use this service in the future.
